LEGAL SAFETY RULES — Issue 16 — The Right Decision… at the Wrong Time
There are two kinds of time most people never think about: Chronos and Kairos.
Chronos is the time we all know — the clock, deadlines, schedules. It tells us when something happens.
But Kairos is different. Kairos is timing — the moment when something becomes right, or wrong. Not because of the decision itself, but because of when it happens.
In legal matters, this difference matters more than many people realize.
A contract signed too quickly can create obligations that are not fully understood. A message sent in anger can escalate a problem instead of resolving it. A resignation submitted under pressure can affect rights and opportunities. A settlement accepted too early can have consequences that last for years.
Sometimes, the action itself is not the problem — the timing is.
This is where many people get it wrong. They focus on what they are doing, but overlook when they are doing it. In many situations, timing becomes part of responsibility.
That is why one of the most important legal safety rules is simple: pause.
Not every response needs to be immediate. Not every decision needs to be made today. Sometimes, protection is not found in the action itself, but in the timing of the action.
Because the difference between a safe decision and a costly one is not always knowledge. Sometimes, it is simply timing.
Smart Question:
Is this the right decision… or simply the right decision at the wrong time?
Legal Safety Rule:
The quality of a decision is not determined only by what we do. Sometimes, it is determined by when we do it.
