Steps to Take if You Are a Victim of Domestic Violence

If you are in a situation of domestic violence, it’s important to understand that help is available, and you do not need to continue suffering. Seeking help is a courageous step and your safety should be the top priority. Please take the following steps:

  1. Report the crime
    • Authorities in the UAE take domestic violence very seriously, so if you are a victim of domestic violence, please report the matter to the Ministry of Interior or the Ministry of Community Development, who will initiate appropriate legal actions. Incidents involving physical or sexual violence must be reported directly to the police.
  2. Know Your Options at the Police Station
    • When you visit the police station, you have several choices:
      • Record the incident for future reference.
      • Request a formal warning for your abuser.
      • Opt to file charges against your abuser.
  3. Document Your Injuries
    • If you sustain any injuries from the abuse, it is crucial to seek medical attention and document your injuries, as this evidence can be vital for your case against the abuser, and you can use the report when reporting the matter to the police. In Dubai, you can visit Rashid Hospital, and in Abu Dhabi, you can go to Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City Hospital.
  4. Access Safe Spaces
    • If it is not safe to return home and you have nowhere to go, then please contact an emergency shelter home, which can provide shelter to you and your children. If you are a resident of Dubai, please contact Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, and for Abu Dhabi, please contact EWAA Shelter for Women and Children.
